About the Mayan Dreamspell
The Mayan Dreamspell is a modern system of timekeeping, self knowledge and consciousness developed by José and Lloydine Argüelles. It draws inspiration from the mathematics, symbolism and cyclical understanding of time found within ancient Mesoamerican traditions, particularly the sacred 260 day Tzolkin.
The Dreamspell is not the traditional Mayan calendar itself. It is a contemporary framework created to help modern people explore time, identity, human development and our relationship with the natural world in a different way.
This little corner of the internet is where we approach the Dreamspell as a system of psychological, philosophical and spiritual self evolution. It offers a language for understanding the deeper patterns beneath our behaviour, relationships, strengths, challenges and recurring life experiences.
Rather than telling you who you should become, it helps you recognise the pattern already operating beneath your conditioning.
What does Dreamspell mean?
The word Dreamspell contains the central philosophy of the system.
A dream can be understood as the reality we collectively experience. A spell can mean both an enchantment and a period of time.
Every civilisation lives inside a shared story about reality. Our calendars, language, institutions, economic systems and cultural expectations shape what we believe time is for, what success should look like and what makes a human life valuable.
These ideas become so familiar that we stop recognising them as ideas. They simply become the world as we know it.
The Dreamspell invites us to become conscious of the dream we are participating in. It asks us to examine the assumptions we have inherited and consider whether they support health, creativity, connection and meaning, or whether they keep us trapped in pressure, comparison and constant dissatisfaction.
The purpose is not to escape reality. It is to become more conscious within it.
Rethinking Time
Before we look at the current world model or any calendar systems we must take note of a few things with critical judgement.
Every belief, opinion, understanding or thought you have on any given thing is based on your conditioning and reference points.
A large majority of these reference points have been put in place through your education and parental conditioning. Most of these beliefs are built within systems that only stand within capitalism.
Capitalism serves the money/asset holders at the top.
Capitalism thrives off people buying things. People buy things when they believe they do not have something and they think they need it. Through marketing and media, capitalism creates insecurity and pain points in people and then sells them the solution. It makes people feel they are ugly, overweight, underweight, old, wrinkled, weak, sick, non-symmetrical, and then sells them beauty products, beauty procedures, gym memberships, diets, clothing, and more. It targets different genders in different ways. We will go deeper into this in coming posts and videos.
The calendar that this system runs on is the Gregorian calendar. This calendar is the container in which control, humiliation, sickness, war, anger, violence and insecurity serve a currently diabolical system that makes money from your time, your fear and your self-loathing.
The world is the dream. Your Kin is the spell.
Within this philosophy, the world can be understood as the dream and your Kin as the spell.
The dream is the field of reality we all inhabit. It includes our relationships, work, families, bodies, communities, opportunities and challenges. Yet our experience of that world is never completely neutral. It is filtered through attention, belief, memory, language, expectation and perception.
We do not simply receive reality. We continually interpret it, respond to it and participate in shaping it.
Your Kin is the mathematical and archetypal pattern through which you participate in that field. It is created through the combination of one of twenty Solar Seals and one of thirteen Galactic Tones, forming one of the 260 possible Kin of the Tzolkin.
Each Kin represents a distinct relationship between consciousness and time. It describes a particular way of perceiving, creating, relating, developing and transforming experience.
When we do not understand our own pattern, we often create unconsciously. We repeat inherited beliefs, recreate familiar relationship dynamics, pursue goals that do not belong to us and measure ourselves against standards we never consciously chose.
Understanding your Kin allows you to see the pattern you are already using to shape your life. It can reveal the conditions that strengthen you, the situations that distort your energy, the relationships that develop you and the forms of work, expression and purpose that create greater coherence.
This is why the Dreamspell can also be understood as an intellectual, mathematical and philosophical approach to manifestation.
It does not reduce manifestation to positive thinking or endlessly repeating what you want. It proposes that creation occurs through coherence. Your thoughts, choices, actions, relationships and timing must begin moving in the same direction.
The mathematics provides the structure. The archetypes provide the language. The cycles provide the timing. Conscious participation provides the creative force.
From this perspective, manifestation is not about forcing reality to obey the personality. It is about bringing your personality into greater alignment with your underlying pattern.
As that pattern becomes more coherent, less energy is lost through contradiction. You stop pursuing one intention while repeatedly acting from another. You become more aware of where fear, comparison or conditioning are shaping your decisions.
This is what can make the Dreamspell feel like a way of fast tracking personal evolution. It does not remove effort or uncertainty. It reduces the time spent working against yourself.
Irregular time and the feeling that something is wrong
The Gregorian calendar is structurally irregular. Its months contain different numbers of days, weeks continually shift and dates rarely repeat in a clear pattern.
We are so accustomed to this that we rarely question it. Yet the Dreamspell asks whether the systems we use to organise life also influence how life feels.
When our external structure is built around interruption, urgency and uneven cycles, we may begin experiencing ourselves in the same way. We can feel fragmented, disorganised or permanently out of sequence.
We expect ourselves to perform consistently despite living in bodies that naturally move through changes in energy, focus, emotion, hormones and need. Rest can feel like failure. Exhaustion can feel like weakness. Uncertainty can feel like proof that we are lost.
Modern culture also encourages a linear model of life. We are expected to move steadily through education, career, income, property, partnership and family. When life instead moves through grief, illness, reinvention, pause or change, we may assume something has gone wrong.
The problem may not be that our lives are irregular. Human life is naturally cyclical.
The problem may be that we are judging a cyclical life through a mechanical structure.
The false promise of constant accumulation
The modern economic dream often teaches us that identity, security and meaning can be achieved through accumulation.
More money, more possessions, more status, more productivity, more visibility and more evidence that we are progressing.
This can create a dependence on external validation. We may spend money to communicate beauty, intelligence, success, taste or belonging. What we own and display becomes evidence that our lives matter.
The Dreamspell challenges the idea that existence must be continually proven.
It asks who we are without the need to constantly demonstrate that we are productive, attractive, successful or advancing. It asks what remains when life is no longer treated as an economic performance.
This does not mean rejecting money, ambition, work or material life. Money is necessary within the world we live in, and meaningful work can be deeply fulfilling. The question is whether money serves life or whether life becomes organised entirely around money.
Within the Dreamspell philosophy, human value is inherent rather than earned. Creativity, care, love, intelligence, beauty, relationship and consciousness cannot be reduced to financial output.
Returning to 13:20 time
The Dreamspell proposes a different relationship with time through what Argüelles called the 13:20 frequency.
The number thirteen refers to the thirteen Galactic Tones and the thirteen moons of the 13 Moon calendar. The number twenty refers to the twenty Solar Seals of the Tzolkin. Together, the thirteen tones and twenty seals create the 260 Kin.
The 13 Moon calendar divides the year into thirteen equal moons of twenty eight days. Each moon contains exactly four seven day weeks, creating a consistent repeating rhythm throughout the year.
Alongside this is the 260 day Tzolkin, in which every day carries a unique combination of one tone and one seal. Rather than treating each day as an empty unit to be filled with tasks, the Dreamspell approaches time as qualitative. Different days carry different symbolic themes, developmental questions and possibilities.
This does not mean that every event is predetermined. It means that time can be experienced as meaningful rather than neutral.
The 13:20 framework invites us to see time as a living pattern instead of a mechanical container.
Harmony, regularity and human life
The natural world moves through rhythm.
Day follows night. The moon waxes and wanes. Seasons return. The tides rise and fall. The body moves through cycles of sleep, energy, hormones, digestion, activity and recovery.
Regularity does not mean sameness. It means pattern.
A pattern creates orientation. It allows us to recognise where we are within a larger cycle. The Dreamspell proposes that consciousness also benefits from this kind of structure.
When time is experienced through regular cycles, periods of slowness no longer need to be interpreted as failure. Change can be understood as part of a larger movement. Rest becomes a necessary phase rather than an interruption.
In health, this may mean listening to the body instead of constantly overriding it. In relationships, it may mean recognising that difference and tension can serve development. In work, it may mean creating from natural strengths instead of forcing ourselves into roles that continually deplete us.
In finances, it may mean separating income from identity and making decisions from clarity rather than comparison. In happiness, it may mean recognising fulfilment as a state of internal coherence rather than something waiting at the end of achievement.
The Dreamspell does not promise that changing your relationship with time will remove every difficulty. It suggests that a more coherent structure may help you relate to difficulty differently.
Time is Art
One of the central ideas of the Dreamspell is the movement from Time is Money to Time is Art.
When time is money, every hour must justify itself through output. A day is considered valuable when something has been completed, produced or earned.
When time is art, life becomes something we participate in and create.
Art in this sense is not limited to painting, music or design. It includes the way we speak, love, work, care, cook, build relationships, raise children, organise our homes and respond to difficulty.
A life can be approached as a creative process rather than an economic transaction.
This changes the questions we ask. Instead of only asking how much we achieved, we can ask whether we were present. Instead of asking whether a choice looks successful, we can ask whether it creates greater coherence. Instead of asking how quickly we can move, we can ask whether we are moving in the right direction.
A framework for self evolution
At its heart, the Dreamspell is a system of remembering.
It reminds us that every person carries a unique pattern, that life unfolds through cycles rather than straight lines and that our greatest strengths and greatest struggles often emerge from the same source.
Your Kin can be used as a mirror for understanding your natural gifts, recurring challenges and developmental path. The surrounding placements, including the Guide, Analog, Antipode and Occult, reveal how different archetypal forces support, challenge, balance and deepen your central pattern.
The system also unfolds through daily cycles and thirteen day Wavespells. This means it is not simply a personality system. It is a living framework that places individual development within a larger movement of time.
Whether you approach the Dreamspell as philosophy, psychology, spirituality, symbolic mathematics or a framework for self reflection, its invitation remains the same: understand your pattern, recognise your cycles, question the story you inherited and begin creating from a place of greater awareness.
At Kin260, we believe your Kin is more than a birthday calculation. It is a language for understanding how you move through time and how you participate in reality.
The world is the dream. Your Kin is the spell.
Learning both gives you the opportunity to live, create and evolve with greater intention.
WHY WE CREATED KIN260
When I first found the Mayan Dreamspell, I became completely absorbed by it. I spent hours, days and eventually months trying to find and translate the small amount of information I could access online. I drove to old and independent bookstores across different towns, searching through shelves for anything that might contain another piece of the system.
I was baffled by how difficult the information was to find. What did exist was often scattered across old websites, rare books, diagrams and language that was difficult to understand without already knowing the system. There was no clear place where someone could arrive with no prior knowledge and be guided through it in a way that felt practical, intelligent and relevant to their actual life.
The more Jack and I learned, the more deeply the Dreamspell affected the way we understood ourselves, our relationship and the world around us. It gave language to patterns we had felt but had never been able to explain. It changed the way we thought about time, purpose, health, relationships, creativity and personal evolution.
We could not understand why this information was not more widely known.
That disbelief became the beginning of Kin260.
We created Kin260 to gather this wisdom into one accessible space and translate it into language that modern people can actually understand and use. Our aim is not to simplify the Dreamspell until it loses its depth, but to make its depth easier to enter.
What began as a personal search became a complete priority for us. We felt so affected by this system that making it available to others no longer felt like a side project. It felt like something we were responsible for sharing.
Kin260 exists so that another person does not have to spend months searching through scattered sources just to understand their own Kin. It is a place to learn the system clearly, explore your codes deeply and begin applying them to your relationships, work, health, choices and everyday life.
We are still shocked that this wisdom is not common knowledge.
Kin260 is our attempt to change that.
The 12:60 world
One of the central ideas within the Dreamspell is the distinction between the 12:60 frequency and the 13:20 frequency.
José Argüelles used the term 12:60 to describe the modern system organised around twelve irregular months and the sixty minute hour. This is the dominant structure through which much of the world measures work, productivity, trade, progress and daily life.
The Gregorian calendar is useful as a civil system. It allows people, businesses and countries to coordinate across the world. The Dreamspell does not deny this function. Instead, it asks what happens when a mechanical system of time becomes the primary way human beings understand themselves.
In modern culture, time is treated as a resource. It can be saved, spent, wasted, sold, managed or lost. Hours are exchanged for wages. Productivity is measured against time. Rest is often treated as something that must be earned.
When every hour carries an economic value, we can begin assigning economic value to ourselves. Productivity becomes virtue. Rest becomes guilt. Achievement becomes identity.
Many people live with a persistent feeling that they are behind. Behind financially, professionally, emotionally or socially. There is always another milestone ahead, and the present moment becomes something to move through rather than inhabit.
The Dreamspell suggests that this is not only an economic problem. It is also a psychological and philosophical one.
